Well this might be a good sign:

Top-five pick packs his bags for training camp
Posted by Mike Florio on July 27, 2010 1:55 AM ET

He's not under contract, yet. But Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, the second overall pick in the 2010 draft, is packing his bags and getting ready to go to Detroit.

How do we know this? Suh said so himself, on his Twitter page.

In his first entry in nearly a week, Suh posted the following message last Monday night: "What a great day of workouts and relaxing and packing for D twn. PS looking forward to camp!!"

The Lions open training camp on Friday. And while Suh has said nothing about actually leaving for Detroit or signing a contract when he arrives, he seems to be anxious to get going.

Some teams would use that disclosure as leverage against the player. If, after all, the player is champing (yes, it's champing not chomping) at the bit to suit up and play, he'll be likely to take slightly less favorable terms. That's why many agents don't allow their clients to come to the town in which the team's training camp will be conducted until a deal is done or extremely close to it. Other agents will secretly put their clients up in a nearby location, so that they'll be able to show up and sign the deal and join the team in training camp as soon as the terms are worked out.

Some think that Suh, the only player in the top five not represented by CAA, would be wise to wait for the mega-firm to finalizes deals for the first overall pick (Rams quarterback Sam Bradford) and the third overall pick (Bucs defensive tackle Gerald McCoy). But Suh apparently wants to play football -- a refreshing trait given that he's going to strike it rich; the only question at this point is how rich he'll strike it.

Another update for Billy:
Detroit Free Press wrote:
Lions Ndamukong Suh, Jahvid Best remain unsigned
DT needs more time than RB in training camp
BY CARLOS MONARREZ
FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

The Lions are still working to sign first-round draft picks Ndamukong Suh (No. 2 overall) and Jahvid Best (No. 30) in time for the opening of training camp this week, but Suh runs a greater risk of falling behind if he misses time in camp.

Best is a running back, and the Lions have used him in many roles from receiver to punt returner. But Best's position is not considered as technically difficult as Suh's defensive tackle position.

"I think the running back can afford to miss more time than the defensive lineman can because the running back position is probably -- from a technical standpoint -- one of the easiest to come in and play," said Gil Brandt, Dallas' vice president of player personnel in 1960-89. "In the case of Suh, every day that he misses -- and not only Suh's case, but Best's case also -- every day that they miss sets them back."

But there were two encouraging signs. The St. Louis Rams are reportedly optimistic they can sign No. 1 pick Sam Bradford and have the quarterback in camp for the first workout Thursday. Once Bradford signs, the salary scale will be set and will make it easier for Suh and other first-round picks to reach contract agreements. (The only first-rounder to sign has been Dez Bryant with Dallas.)

The other positive indication came from Suh. Late Monday night, he posted this on his Twitter account: “What a great day of workouts and relaxing and packing for D twn. PS looking forward to camp!!”

Most unsigned draft picks stay close to the training camp site as the reporting date nears. Former Lions receiver Roy Williams, a first-round pick in 2004, missed two days of camp during a holdout. He stayed in the Allen Park area and needed only a few minutes to arrive and sign his contract.

It is common for players in a contract holdout to work out on their own, but Brandt said those workouts are only illusory.

"What happens in a workout program is they're usually working with some of their buddies back in college or in high school," Brandt said. "What they do is they arrive at the site at 10 o'clock and they sit down and start talking and telling war stories with their old buddies. All of a sudden a guy looks and 'Oh, my gosh! It's a quarter to 11. I've got to get to work.' So a guy works out for 45 minutes or an hour and 'I've got a 12 o'clock appointment, so I've got to leave.'

"So you might think you're working out hard, but it's not anywhere near the structured workouts that you get while you're at training camp."

Lions' Jim Schwartz: Rookie signings will happen quickly

With players due to report for training camp Friday, the Detroit Lions still have not signed their first-round draft picks. But coach Jim Schwartz said he expects teams to sign their players quickly after the higher draft picks reach deals.

“I think, when you talk about first-round picks signing, there’s a domino effect with a lot of those,” Schwartz said today in a meeting with reporters. “So many teams wait for another team. And not just teams, agents wait. Nobody wants to be the first to stick their neck out, particularly from an agent’s standpoint. That’s just part of the business.”

St. Louis quarterback Sam Bradford, the No. 1 overall pick, has not signed his contract and missed the Rams’ first day of rookie workouts today.

Schwartz said assistant coaches have been in contact regularly with defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh and running back Jahvid Best, the No. 2 and No. 30 overall picks in April's draft, and the rookies shouldn’t have much ground to make up when they report to the team.

“Ndamukong and Jahvid are in really good shape,” Schwartz said. “They left here in great shape. They both had good spring workouts after the draft for us. They’re guys that we’re counting on. I’m sure, whenever they get here, we’ll get them up to speed pretty quickly, and they’ll be ready to go. Both of those guys want to be here.

“But it’s just part of the business that you accept, and with the system that we have right now is that you need certain players to sign and then, all of a sudden, three or four players around them will sign. All of a sudden, things will happen pretty quickly."

Players are scheduled to report for training camp between noon and 6 p.m. Friday. When they report, they will be assessed by trainers. That assessment, as well as a conditioning test before Saturday’s first practice, will help determine which players go on the physically unable to perform list.

Players nursing injuries, especially players with knee injuries such as safety Ko Simpson, cornerback Jack Williams, tight end Brandon Pettigrew and running back Kevin Smith, could be candidates for the PUP list. Schwartz said he would make the main determination on the PUP list around noon Saturday, with the first practice of training camp scheduled for 3:15 p.m.

Linebacker Ryan Stamper and safety Randy Phillips, two undrafted rookie free agents, returned for physicals and workouts this week, but the team has not signed them to contracts.
